SXSW review

SXSW BAND SPOTLIGHT : FACING NEW YORK

Sounds like: A more tuneful, pop-oriented TV On the Radio
"The skinny: The four band members — Eric Frederic, Matt Fazzi, Branden Canchola and Omar Cuellar — were trying their best to get people to turn out to their SXSW set. They were walking up and down Sixth Street wearing sandwich boards promoting the gig (as well as handing out coupons for free beers!). Those who took them up on the offer witnessed a pretty solid set of wild, art-pop tunes. The energetic band, which channels a type of Crazy Horse vibe, differentiated itself from the flock of SXSW clones with an eclectic instrumental mix that included two drum sets and a pair of Rhodes."

from Oakland Tribune

Facing New York wants to tell you about up-coming tour.

It's the new year. But we don't resolve to do anything. We intend to man up. We intend to deliver the message. We intend to share what we've been cooking. We intend to open our pores and let your sweat in. We leave for tour March 9th.

Facing New York "Hot n' Ready" Tour 2007

featuring:

- the new psychadelic rhythm & blues sounds!
- the hot n' ready four piece lineup!
- meaner grooves!
- softer hearts!

That's right! 2 guitars + 2 basses + 2 drum sets + 2 Fender Rhodes + 2 Roland Junos + 4 close friends = a band obsessed with "next" and hopelessly devoted to the black music and prog rock from the early 1970s. We have several new songs prepared for this tour, and will be continuing to write on the road in order to deliver you the freshest choice cuts. This will be our first tour as a four piece, and as anyone from Oakland will tell you, the shit is hard.

Important News from Facing New York
Hello everyone- it is Omar.. aka the drummer... aka the bearer of bad news. Here we go:
1) Eric Frederic checked himself into the hospital 3 days ago due to pains in the gut. He went under the knife 2 days ago to remove a blockage in his large intestine caused by scar tissue from an apendectomy a couple of years ago. He is now short 10" of intestine and he came up on an 8" scar on his belly. He's fine. He's recovering in the hospital for the next few days.
As for the tour coming up- We're canceling the Albaquerque show, and we're starting in Phoenix sans Eric. We will be rocking as a 4 piece with Matt Fazzi on lead vocals.
We're not sure where along the tour Eric will join us or if he will at all. We shall see.
2) Rene Carranza will be touring as a member of Facing New York for the last time over the course of the next 3 weeks. Rene has decided to continue his education at UC Berkeley. Here's a short message from him:
Ladies, gents, lovely friends,
I've been looking all over the place for some intangible thing called balance, and
I haven't found it. End vagueness now: I'm going back to UC Berkeley on August 22nd and the Facing New Yorks will proceed without me. The tour we're embarking on this week will be my last with the dudes, so if you miss these shows, you're missing a farewell of sorts (aside from the .peace-out, Rene. show tba).
It's a bitter-sweet departure, needless to say. We are on great terms, I love them and I'm pretty sure they love me, and we'd make it out if Matt didn't have a girlfriend. Or if Eric liked guys. I've had the privilege of playing with four phenomenally talented musicians and in the course of our comradeship we've grown together like a beard on a face and the hot-sauce that drips into it. Omar is the hot-sauce. Brandon's the solid. Matt's the love and Eric is my guy. I'm sad to leave the baby-Frankenstein I helped birth together, but I'm ecstatic about the possibilities of my new life. I will keep writing and playing music and will surely collaborate with one or two of four or five of the New Brunswicks (FNYs).
To the lovely homies who have come into my life via our touring (the Minnesotans, the Arizonians, Washingtonians, New Yorkers, Japanese, San Diegahns, and every Canadian who was ever born), I truly hope to see you again and I cherish the memories that have stuck; come hang out with me in Berkeley. Thanks for the support. F*** the world bank.
Rene
-------------------------------------------------------
So that is that. We do love Rene, and we know that he will do great things. We support him 100% of the way. Go Tito.
Having said that.... all this drama is all the more reason to come out to some shows. Come see a weird 4 pc version of FNY as well as Rene's last shows in your town. See you guys soon. PEACE.
-Omar
