01. Flight There is a bit of irony that runs through Awake And Alert's debut full-length, Devil In A Lambskin Suit. Despite the band's wide-eyed moniker, the album begins in a fashion one would typically associate with a relaxed, comatose state of mind; however, this is where the magic of the Arizona-based quartet lies. While "Flight" may be a slow-moving affair driven by atmospheric guitar melodies and the soaring vocals of Maya Peart, it doubles as a definitive statement from a young band harkening back to the days when good music meant injecting moodiness and feeling into quality instrumentation and songwriting. Formed at the beginning of 2004, Peart and her band mates – guitarist Blake Kimball, bassist Spencer Reed, and drummer Tony Reed – spent time fine-tuning their experimental indie rock in the suburbs of Phoenix before laying down their first EP, 2005's Weight, with local producer Bob Hoag (The Format, Limbeck, Dear And The Headlights). Not long after, the band signed with Five One, Inc. to release their first full-length, later dubbed Devil In A Lambskin Suit. After once again recording with producer Bob Hoag last winter, Devil In A Lambskin Suit finds Awake And Alert in their best form to date. From the superb hooks in the title track to the haunting soundscapes of "Hollow Bodies" to the stripped-down "Let Autumn Lift Me" where Peart's soothing vocals truly shine, the breadth of Awake And Alert is unmatched.
